The Byrd House- more than meets the eye (GF)

When I think of a “bird house” I think of 4 or 5 pieces of wood that are carefully crafted into a cute artistic home where birds can find food and shelter.

The Byrd House Restaurant located at 4246 North Buffalo Rd, in Orchard Park NY has done much the same thing; for us non bi-pedaled, non winged creatures. They’ve taken a pub style atmosphere and added creature comforts and character.  Being sandwiched between two high end restaurants that are well established might be enough to make someone walk the other way. But the Byrd House has done a great job of taking the strengths of their comrades and balanced it with their own unique flavor. And I do mean flavor!

As soon as I walked in, the hostess was more than pleasant. She was welcoming and just the right amount of talkative (if you know what I mean). With outdoor seating during summer months, we quickly found a table and our server greeted us immediately.

I started with Cashew Chicken Spring Rolls ($7.95) and a fresh salad with balsamic vinaigrette.  The chicken was perfectly cooked and the rolls were very fresh and made right! Light seasonings and, Asian vegetables along with dipping sauce rounded out this healthy appetizer.

Next I ordered the Pot Roast Sandwich ($8.95) slowly cooked and topped with tobacco onions, all on a fresh brioche roll with red wine demi-glaze. The amount of flavor made my mouth water for more. For my sensitive eaters, the reason I liked this dish so much is due to the fact that the pot roast is sliced extremely thin. This allows for less fat on the meat yet retaining all the juice and flavor. Pot Roast is a healthier option than steak or burger. The tobacco onions are fried, but they are piled on top; so feel free to push them aside. Better yet- ask the server to leave them off. I have found that they are more than accommodating when it comes to food sensitivities. This fabulous sandwich is also served with two sides or your choice, and for $8.95 it’s a smokin’ deal!

The chef  Sam Weiss knows how to compliment a good dish and has done a great job of re-defining “pub grub”. With specials like “happy hour” $1.00 off specials, beer and food pairings, wine specials and lunch specials that offer $5.00 off your meal with a $25.00 order, you really can’t go wrong. The menu offers gluten friendly options such as Moroccan salmon ($17.95), a slow grilled chicken sandwich ($8.95), and a vegetarian pot pie ($9.50) with fresh vegetable. And who doesn’t love a nice selection of micro/craft beers (at least for those not gluten sensitive).

Come down and check it out. It’s the perfect blend of food and comfort!
