Salute Small Business Week!

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories.

So This week I’ve decided to highlight a hidden little bakery that was created out of love and necessity- Bon Bon’s Gluten Free Bakery.

imagesCASXDMM5Bon Bon’s, located at 1298 Orchard Park Rd West Seneca NY, grew from a mother’s need to cook gluten free for her daughter. She soon realized that there are many that have the same obsticles in eating gluten free. Yet finding restaurants, let alone bakeries, that are strictly gluten free can be near impossible. Soon Bon Bon’s took shape, and having recently opened its doors, Bon Bon’s tailors its food strictly to the digestive sensitive. But what it lacks in ingredients, it more than makes up for in taste. Bon Bon’s believes (as many of us do) that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice taste to eat healthy!

While I am certainly seeing an uptick in gluten free education, and more restaurants acknowledging the need to include gluten free items on their menus; it is still a slow process.

When I first visited Bon Bon’s what hit me immediately was the delicious sugary smell of cupcakes and frosting. The smell is one that I would imagine Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory would smell of. The aromas swirl around you like a cloud of sugar dust fairies; dropping subtle hints of vanilla bean, peanut butter and chocolate. Due to the lack of cupcake cravings in my life, I did not have an urge to charge for the plethora of cupcakes in the windows. What I did gravitate towards were the peanut butter cookies and chocolate brownies- all gluten free and both $1.50 a cookie/brownie.

Bon Bon’s also makes chocolate chip cookie cakes and vanilla or chocolate birthday cakes. For a full list with prices click here.

What I find truly appealing is that Bon Bon’s is branching out; trying their hand at gluten free breads, pizza crust and dinner rolls. For those who are gluten sensitive, the complaint I’ve heard most often, is the complicated task of trying to find delicious gluten free breads (due to the flour that is used to process most breads). While the breads were not available when I was there, I have spoken to others who highly recommend them.

This unique little bakery is fairly centerally located, and built by design. The owner is passionate about gluten free foods and is a dedicated mother; trying to provide her daughter, and others who have digestive sensitivities, with options- eat healthy, eat smart, eat gluten free, eat well!
