Festive Foods For Fall: Betty’s (GF)

It’s that time of year when the steely eyed mammoth’s of the corporate world make a frenzied dash toward the finish line; where the dubious notion of “getting it all done before the holiday’s” seems possible; and where cold’s and germs run ramped. For anyone who hates cold’s as much as I do then you understand me when I say “Comfort Food People!” It’s all about the comfort food this time of year.

If any of you have suffered through cold’s, cough’s, and pesky sinus problems that make you look like a raccoon then you’ll want to read this- because I found a great place for comfort food. Betty’s at 370 Virginia St, Buffalo NY is one of those restaurants that makes you feel like you were just hugged by your mom and sent home with garlic chicken soup. All the world is right again, and your cold won’t last a day!

Betty’s offers some of the best comfort foods with a unique and creative twist.  Even better- they offer seasonal specials. Betty’s lunch menu is a perfect blend of hearty comfort foods and light affairs that don’t leave you in a food coma on your way back to work. During the summer it’s Mushroom and Pea Risotto, or a gorgeous green been and lentil salad. This time of year it’s a hearty Butternut Squash Soup (a bowl is only $4.75,) a very healthy Mediterranean Dipping Plate complete with fresh kalamata olives, homemade hummus, baba ghanoush, cucumbers and tabbouleh  (which you can request without cheese and get gluten free bread, $11.00,) or a hot Cuban Sandwich- which packs a punch with roast pork loin, smoked turkey, chipotle mayo and sweet pickle all wrapped up in a fresh kaiser roll ($10.00.) The specials change regularly so call a head of time for daily’s.

Betty’s offers the freshest ingredients and healthy options that everyone can enjoy. I spoke with a manager who also informed me that Betty’s truly understands the needs of its clients and has worked hard to become educated in the area of gluten friendly foods. But what I really love about Betty’s is that feeling of having just walked into an eclectic version of June Cleaver’s kitchen. There is nothing better than a warm soothing portion of butternut squash soup and a jammed packed omega 3 Salmon Salad when your not feeling well. Betty’s is a labyrinth of pictures and colors that shock the senses; a delightfully disorienting display of character and charm.

If your sinuses are anything like mine then you know that this time of year can really put you through your paces; and when you can’t have mom hovering over your stove then Betty’s is a great alternative.
